Finally Graduating!!!
MARCH 2oth (friday) 7-10pm is the opening of the Undergraduate exhibition. On my little spot of wall will be the "Godvoid" originals, FREE GODVOID BOOKS, a large drawing, some prints and small works for sale. Hope you can come! There's gonna be food, free comics (other artists are giving away comics at the Flaxicorn Library), and ART of course!

Oh wait...i still have half a semester to go!

Exploring Chicago

The most interesting thing i found while searching my nieghborhood was this mural

It is in a similar style to other murals in chicago during the time period. Bright color, simplified, echo’s of Rivera and the 60’s.
The date for the original painting of this mural, ‘Together we overcome’ is 1971. There was a restoration in 1974 and another one in 2004. The mural looks to be in pretty good shape. It’s almost a little hesitant/too simple compared to other murals that were made later on in city.
The Goal of this was to encourage unity between the Latino community and the African American community. On the foremost flag blazes the word “UNITY”, and on the second one “JUSTICE”. There is also a picketer with the words “HOUSING IS STILL THE ISSUE”. In the center is a Latino hand clasping an African American hand. Above this are the words, “TOGETHER WE OVERCOME”.
The mural is five blocks away from where I live. It’s an area of dog walkers, baby strollers, and joggers. I was initially surprised to see knifes and guns gracing a mural in an area I felt very safe in. Most people I pass are young hipsters. There are a lot of expensive shops. Across the street from the mural is an Organic certified pizza restaurant.
Knifes, guns, gangs, protests, and a need for the community to unite are not very common in this area anymore. Upscale shopping is.
Upon further reading, when the restoration happened in 2004, many people who had been living there for decades came and shared stories with the artists, and gave thanks for the preservation of the history of the area. It seems out of place due to gentrification, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be there. I felt guilty standing in front of it and would feel even more crummy if it was painted over with a mural of people shopping and eating over priced pizza.
Housing is still the issue. When the landlords realize that people will pay more to be in an up and coming neighborhood, the current tenants are replaced by ones who can afford the up and coming price. I wondered about the history of my apartment, who lived there in years past? What was the neighborhood like? Did the Latinos and African Americans in the area truly unite within the community? I believe this mural is successful because it’s a reminder of history, A reminder to unite under injustice, it made me think, and even though i don't think the original was done completely by 'professional artists', i think it was skillfully crafted.

Everyone! Go and read the "Sandman Chronicles" by Niel Gaiman (yes the writer of Coraline the Book that got turned into a movie that felt like a videogame but the book is very good). Amazing story teller, cool characters (favorite is Delirium) and great art!

Lost My Comic Book

I left my bag on the bus home to ohio over thanksgiving. It had my completed Comic Book i've been working on all semester in it... Yes i'm tearing myself to pieces. I hope mega bus has a good system for recovering lost bags *crossing fingers.*

Well, at least i have the cover and back of the book, here it is. I'm posting this in hopes that a reunion of myself and my book is close to the future.

Consumerism?

Let me begin by saying i think a lot about what we consume and the filters we use to understand/digest things. This is called "Hear+See= Speak" and is a testament to my single semester of printmaking. I loved the results, but the process was constricting. Some people see what this is after looking a bit, but for those on a tight schedule and/or short attention span...

Soooo... This is what i have devised for those who insist on knowing "what it means". But it can mean whatever you want it to mean, this diagram is to describe my thoughts upon creating it.

I'm kinda floundering about. I'm not really a techi, nor do i enjoy computers. But i REALLY want to do this, and to make a blog that not only has my voice/my art, but also my life. Having a hard time adjusting to the thought that others can read what i write here (used to a sketchbook and pencil). And i'll admit it limits what i would/wouldn't say. How much honesty can we put forth on a blog? Too much could get you into alot of trouble should the wrong person stumble in. Well, that being said, i will continue to work on the writing section and posting arts. I don't think i'm gonna use this place to sell it though, if you're interested, shoot me an email! i'll respond within a day. Otherwise, criticism is welcome ^_^

Twas a night to remember, Dad's first full length cheoragraphed ballet! So proud of him (Devon Carney). The Opening night (halloween) was a costume night.
